T-minus…

…3 weeks until graduation

…4 weeks until I’m on a plane to Asia

…8 weeks until I start my new job in D.C.!

Also, why did you decide to go to Virginia Tech instead of a school where their Communications department is highly ranked? Also, thank you so much for input!

When I first came to VT, I didn’t know what I wanted to do! I fell in love with PR after an Intro to Comm class (Dr. Waggenspack is great). Also, I fell in love with the school long ago — I couldn’t have picked anywhere better (my brother attended before me, and my sister will start here next year). Also, when it comes to Comm and PR, I’ve been told by employers that they care far more about your experience (tangible examples of what you can do and what you’ve done — i.e., internships and class projects) than your degree or your grades.

I'm considering attending VT in the Fall as a Communications major, can you tell me anything about what classes are like? I noticed your into PR which is in the same college but if you can't give me much information that's fine. :]

Hi! I am actually a communications major, PR is just my “concentration” — you can be a Comm major and pick PR, EPJ (electronic and print journalism), or Comm Studies (usually for pre-law people) as your concentration. Classes are interesting if you like the subject, not generally too hard and we have some good professors. My best advice for you if you decide to be a Comm major is to focus on LOTS of internships — esp. in PR and any other field of Comm, internships are essential, and our department doesn’t put enough of a focus on that. Aim to have 3-4 internships by the time you graduate

We are Virginia Tech.

The Hokie Nation embraces our own and reaches out with open heart and hands to those who offer their hearts and minds. We are strong, and brave, and innocent, and unafraid. We are better than we think we are and not quite what we want to be. We are alive to the imaginations and the possibilities. We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness.

We are the Hokies.
We will prevail.

I turned 22! I’m getting old, but at least my best friends came to visit AND we hiked to a waterfall.

Countdown To Asia!

It’s official.

In one month and four days, I’m going to Southeast Asia! My dream trip has become a reality; I’m spending three weeks backpacking through the area with seven of my closest friends. Here’s where we’re going:

Singapore

  • I arrive here after connections in Los Angeles and Beijing (second time in the Beijing airport in a year - wow!) to spend the day with a fellow student from Virginia Tech whose family lives here
  • I also fly out of here at the very end of the trip, with a few extra days to explore the city

Malaysia

  • First to Langkawi, an island off the coast
  • then to Kuala Lumpur to explore the city and venture out to the Batu Caves

Thailand

  • Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok for a few days
  • returning at the end of our trip to spend three days in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, to hike in the jungle, take Thai cooking classes, and spend a day at an elephant refuge (eek!! I love elephants)

Cambodia

  • Training across the border to Siem Reap and spending a day exploring the temple complex of Angkor Wat
  • Then heading to the capital, Phnom Penh

Vietnam

  • Spending a day in Ho Chi Minh City
  • Taking a two-day excursion to Da Lat (recommended by my Vietnamese manicurist, actually) for some gorgeous hiking
  • Headed back to HCMC to fly up to Hanoi, in northern Vietnam
  • Taking a two-day cruise to Ha Long to see Ha Long Bay for kayaking

Overseas tickets are booked and in-Asia flights are booked and visas are being applied for and hostels are picked and vaccination appointments have been made (mine is in two days! Typhoid and Hep A shots, here I come), and I’m so looking forward to it.

Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

7 elements of a nearly perfect pitch

jlpr:

The headline is a teaser, of course. There is no such thing as a perfect pitch.

There are only terrible, so-so, and very good pitches.

If a perfect pitch did exist, it would secure every story it aimed for. As far as I know, no pitch holds that record.

You can, however, write a very…
